Pilot Joe Woollings speaking into the tannoy system of a Thomas Cook craft

Thomas Cook pilot reveals he’s flying his parents

Pilots are usually heard, rather than seen, on commercial planes.

But a first officer stepped out into the cabin earlier this week to make a very special announcement – that his parents were on the flight and that it was the first time he’d ever flown them.

Heart-warming footage shows pilot Joe Woollings making the surprise address in front of 200 shocked passengers on a Thomas Cook flight to Tenerife.

Captured on video and uploaded to the company’s Twitter page on Wednesday, the gesture – which coincided with the third anniversary of Woollings’ pilot licence – has since gone viral.

The footage shows Woollings’ saying: ‘The reason I’m out here speaking to you is that it’s a very special day for me. It’s actually my first day as a commercial airline pilot – only joking.

‘It’s actually my third anniversary of my first-ever flight.

‘But it’s also the first day I’ve been able to take my mum and dad on holiday.

‘They are sat in row 17 and, as you can probably tell from my mum’s face, she had no idea I was doing this flight, so what better way to say thank you than by embarrassing them in front of 200 people.

‘So a big round of applause to my parents, because if they hadn’t met I wouldn’t be here today.’

He’s then seen approaching his parents, who are clearly emotional by the surprise, while the other holidaymakers cheer.

Unsurprisingly, the sweet moment has also made social media users smile. One man, Robert Valentine, said: ‘Well done young man, very proud parents. Loved his mum’s reaction, tears of joy.’

Another, Craig MJ Taylor, simply said: ‘Top man, top pilot, top son’.

Meanwhile, one woman, Sandi Baxter, added: ‘Ahhh this is lovely, amazing Joey. Ain’t it fabulous. Love, love, love it xx.’
