While Sony PlayStation consoles continue to dominate the market against their rivals, it appears things could be changing a little in 2018.

One of the top PS4 games features not currently available on the Xbox One X is Virtual Reality, which has already proven itself to be quite popular.

PlayStation VR headsets have sold well for Sony and appear to be part of their plans moving forward.

Sony recently revealed that it has moved over two million PSVR units, with more likely having gone during the recent holiday season.

Even more games are being released in 2018 then were in 2017, which suggests that a stable market is starting to materialise.

So what about gamers who own the Xbox One X?

Back when Microsoft were first lauding their new generational refresh, the tech giant confirmed they had plans for VR support.

Since then, “mixed reality” has been pushed to be a more Windows-focused feature, which is yet to debut on Xbox One X.

However, some analysts believe that it won’t be a feature saved for Microsoft’s next console and could even arrive later this year.

IDC research analyst Lewis Ward recently told GamingBolt that he believes Microsoft are waiting for some great software to be in the pipes before they launch VR on Xbox One X.

He also believes that this feature will be launched on Xbox One X, touting that it could arrive by late 2018.

“Xbox One X will be able to do VR and AR, although Microsoft will wait to turn that feature on until there’s some great software for it – and that will largely be about Win10 PC app development,” Ward explained.

“Xbox One X will eventually run content preexisting Xbox One’s don’t, and I kind of don’t blame Microsoft for holding onto that shoe for a while (at least late 2018 and perhaps 2019).

“Xbox One X is a 8.5 gen console. PS4 Pro isn’t.”

That fits in with past comments made by Xbox Marketing Manager, Albert Penello, who hinted last year that more could be revealed in 2018 on the subject of mixed reality.

As mentioned above, Microsoft do have their own mixed reality project moving forward, which is currently centered around the Windows platform.

But this isn’t something that Nintendo look set to pursue for their Switch console.

The latest update comes from an interview with Nintendo France Managing Director Philippe Lavoué, who confirmed to French publication Les Numeriques that 4K and VR weren’t current priorities.

This is apparently down to the lack of mainstream VR appeal right now, while 4K would be something for when more people adopt the technology.

This isn’t a sentiment shared by Sony, who want to see a lot of new VR games launched on PS4 this year.

In a recent statement, the company confirmed they are looking increase the amount of games available from 150 to 280 by the end of 2018.

That’s a very ambitious number and would be a serious upgrade for owners of the PSVR device.

This jump in games is apparently due to the number of sales the PlayStation VR has achieved, which is partially down to the drop in price scheduled in October 2017.

This also sounds more like a prediction than an actual statement of how many games are coming to PSVR this year, with Sony quoting an 80% increase being possible.
