Ebay rare coin 50p listed for £395

‘Rare’ 50p selling for £395 – are YOU carrying one in your pocket?

It’s hard to keep track of your change, with many seemingly small change pieces being worth a lot more than you think.

Many of these coins land up on online auction site, eBay, with collectors keeping a beady eye on the latest ‘rare’ coin listings.

One of these new listings is a 50 pence piece, selling for a pretty penny at £395.

The coin, listed by seller alexandergreat1974_2, is a 2016 50p commemorating the Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Based in Mayfield the seller has 98.6 per cent positive feedback from fellow eBay users, receiving one negative review as a seller.

eBay: A ‘rare’ 50 pence piece was listed on eBay for £395 – are you carrying one in your pocket?

Giving very little away the listing’s description simply reads: “Rare UK coin. Now very collectable. Recorded delivery”.

The coin is listed for a pricy £395, 950 times its face value, with the asking price including postage. The seller is also not accepting returns.

No option to bid for the coin is available with only a ‘buy it now’ price stated, showing the seller clearly has faith in the coin’s supposed value.

It’s unclear as to whether or not any offers have been made on the coin, but the ‘rare’ 50p is certainly gaining some interest amongst users, with two views recorded per hour.

Amongst the 50p, alexandergreat197’s other listings include Nike shoes, Canon cameras and other digital recording equipment.

The coin was listed on eBay for a whopping £395

Designed by John Bergdahl the coin commemorates the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, which took place in 1066. 6.7m of the coins were minted in 2016.

The battle was between the Norman-French army of William of Normandy and the English army of Kind Harold Godwinson. After defeating the English army William became known as William the Conquerer.

Despite the high listing price the coin could actually be more common than we are led to believe, with scarcity index ChangeChecker.org giving the coin a ‘common’ rating.

Amongst the rare 50p, alexandergreat197’s has 14 other listings on the online auction site.

Other listings include Nike shoes, two milk coolers, a £935 coffee machine and Canon cameras, along with other digital recording equipment and musical instruments.

Yesterday, a £2 coin was spotted on eBay selling for £300.

The coin has a distinctive design of a lighthouse inscribed on its reverse site, but the value of the coin lies in a small minting error.

The listing by eBay user a.tatta.mnzthg, read: “Rare 2 pound coin Trinity House. Error on rim of the coin writing upside down. Great for a Keen Coin Collector.”

Royal Wedding guests have also been making some big bucks on the online auction site.

Goodie bags from the nuptials of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were spotted selling for as much as £21400. The hessian gift bags were stuffed with chocolate, shortbread and Windsor Castle water.
