Rafael Nadal is aiming to win an 11th French Open title

Nadal begins the defence of his French Open title on Sunday in a first round match against Alexandr Dolgopolov.

He is the heavy favourite to lift an 11th Roland Garros title with Federer once again opting to skip the clay-court season.

Novak Djokovic will be competing but he is still working his way back to his best form having returned from an elbow injury.

It means a huge upset will have to occur in order for Nadal to miss out on winning a 17th Grand Slam title.

Federer’s absence has also led to suggestions that a win for the Spaniard could be seen as belittling the achievement.

However, Nadal doesn’t think it should take away from winning a Grand Slam.

“Exactly the same,” he said. “Being honest. Exactly the same.

“I cannot say that the victory of Federer (in 2009) when I was injured or victory of Novak (Djokovic, in 2016) when I was injured is not that beautiful. Would not be fair for my side.

“When I am winning and other players are not playing for some reason, that’s all.

“It’s bad news for the tournament but not for myself if I win.

“For me, the victory means exactly the same.”
