A bakery in Providence has gained online fame after bringing back the favorite flavors of the 1990s in the form of endlessly Instagrammable donuts.
Lori Kettelle, 30, originally from Warren, NJ, and her husband Paul, also 30, have been in business together for about a year with their specialty donut shop PVDonuts in the Rhode Island capital.
Every morning they head into work around 2am to get baking, which of course means that things can ‘get pretty silly’.
Delightful: PVDonuts in Providence, Rhode Island, are creating decadent delights based on favorite 1990s snacks
A throwback: Wildberry Pop-Tarts and Dunkaroos are among the nostalgic snacks that have inspired donuts at the shop
A bit of work: For the Dunkaroos donuts, baker Lori Kettelle had to ship in boxes from Canada, as the snacks are no longer made in America
‘We obviously play a lot of music to keep us going,’ Lori tells Daily Mail Online. ‘And one day we were switching stations on the hour every hour from 50s, 60s, 70s, and so on, and once we got to a 90s playlist we started reminiscing about all of our favorite treats that we’d beg our parents to buy us.
‘And that’s how the 90s-inspired menu was born!’ she says.
Since that early-hours baking session, PVDonuts has been pumping out nostalgic new treats on the regular, covering everything from childhood favorite breakfast cereals to decadent delights mom and dad used to hide away in the top shelves.
Among their current offerings is a Wildberry Pop-Tart donut, made with bright purple and blue frosting to match the much-loved 90s snack, as well as a Pop Rocks donut, which is covered in the famous crackling candy.

Real comfort food: Breakfast cereals like Rice Krispies and Lucky Charms also make appearances on PVDonuts
A kid again: Lori and her team came up with the idea after arriving at work at 2am and listening to a playlist of 1990s music
Remembering: She explained how they ‘started reminiscing about all of our favorite treats that we’d beg our parents to buy us’, such as Cosmic Brownies (pictured)
Tasty treats: Little Debbie’s Oatmeal Creme Pies are another type of treat given a donut form
Cereals like Fruity Pebbles, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, French Toast Crunch and Rice Krispies also appear on sugary confections in the shop.
As for Lori’s personal favorite, she has no hesitation: Dunkaroos – which was a particular challenge for the bakery to realize.
‘We had to order a package from Canada since they aren’t sold in the United States anymore,’ she says.
‘It was a childhood favorite of mine, and it was a really cool experience to create a unique frosting that matched the flavor profile of the vanilla icing! It tastes just like it, but has a little bit of a different consistency.’
A splash of color: The nostalgic donuts have proved a big hit online, with more than 30,000 followers on Instagram alone
Snap and crackle: They even offer donuts covered in colorful, crackling Pop Rocks
On the way: Lori has said that any upcoming 90s-inspired recipes are under wraps
The concept has been a massive hit – particularly with people on social media, with the PVDonuts Instagram page racking up more than 30,000 followers alone.
‘People have been sharing it A LOT,’ says Lori. ‘We’re seeing it all over the place and customers are really loving this month’s menu.
‘We set out each month to create a really unique menu, and nothing makes us happier than seeing people enjoying our creations.’
As for any future 90s snack-inspired recipes that may be appearing in the shop window, Lori claims that her lips are sealed.
‘That’s a secret, but we’re known for posting random daily specials either on our Instagram page or story, so just keep your eyes peeled!’
