Pregnant cow sparks 2 day rescue after plunging 100ft

Emergency services launched a two day rescue operation to save a stricken cow which plunged 100ft off a cliff.

The animal wandered over the edge of The Rumps headland near Polzeath in Cornwall and was spotted by shocked passersby who noticed her white colouring against the rocks.

Miraculously, not only did the pregnant cow survive the fall, but she clung on desperately as the tide rose dangerously throughout the night.

Cornwall Fire Service, Polzeath Coastguard and Padstow Lifeboat were called to the scene at 2pm on Saturday afternoon.

But due to the rising tide and fading light, they were unable to attempt a rescue.

When they returned at first light yesterday the cow was still clinging to rocks at the foot of the cliff.

Amazingly the freezing tide had swept in and gone out again without drowning her.

A new rescue operation swung into action and as night fell again yesterday evening, she was finally hoisted back up the cliff.

The operation involved teams of firefighters and a fleet of rescue boats.

Posting on Facebook when the two-day rescue began on Saturday, Polzeath Coastguard Rescue Team said ‘We were paged along with Padstow Lifeboat to provide assistance to Cornwall Fire and Rescue Team for the recovery of a cow.

‘Once on scene we provided comms with the lifeboat and assisted where needed. Unfortunately due to the rising tide and the light fading a recovery was not carried out.’

She was with a herd wandering in fields near the clifftop when it seems she lost her footing and plunged over the edge.
