The D.Va Overwatch changes are coming to the next PTR build

Following news of the new Overwatch Junkertown map, Blizzard made another annnouncement about D.Va, confirming that a lot of work is being done internally, including giving her a new ability.

Geoff Goodman, Overwatch Principal Designer, provided the big update, including exactly what had been tested so far.

Upcoming DVA Overwatch PTR changes:

Defense Matrix: Energy drain increased by 2x. This means her effective uptime for this ability has been reduced by 50%.

Boosters: D.Va can now use her Fusion Cannons while flying.

New ability – Micro Missiles: D.Va launches a long salvo of small missiles that explode on impact, dealing damage in a small radius around them. This ability can be used while using her other abilities or firing her Fusion Cannons.

Goodman revealed that these change are being used to provide a more aggressive edge to the hero, telling fans: “The combination of these changes allow her to play more aggressively and deal more damage, at the cost of being able to Defense Matrix as often as before.

“Defense Matrix still remains an extremely powerful tool when timed correctly, but the reduced uptime means D.Va won’t be able to use it nearly as often overall.

“Her new Micro Missiles ability in combination with her ability to fire while flying allow for some more aggressive play, as well as opening up some new options versus heroes such as Pharah.

“Overall the goal here is to reduce her reliance on Defense Matrix and make her more fun to play. As far as balancing goes, we want to nerf Defense Matrix as an ability, not D.Va as a hero.”

These new changes will be launched in an upcoming Overwatch PTR, which seems likely to launch in the coming days.

It follows news of the Overwatch Junkertown map, which will be playable at Gamescom.

This will be followed by a brand new animated short that will explore the origins of the map being shown later this week as part of the official Blizzard live stream.

Hopefully this will include the full Junkertown release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

“Junkertown is an Escort map located in the harsh and unforgiving Australian Outback,” the official description explains.

“Constructed from the remains of a destroyed omnium, it’s now the home to a band of lawless scavengers known as the Junkers, led by their cutthroat Queen.

“When they aren’t pillaging the omnium’s skeleton for anything of value, the Junkers blow off steam in the Scrapyard—a massive gladiatorial arena whose combatants fight for glory, riches…and to survive.”
