Thanksgiving is usually all about coming together with family and giving thanks with for the people in your life – but not for Younger star Nico Tortorella and his partner Bethany Meyers.
The actor has revealed that his and Bethany’s choice to go public about their polyamorous relationship has led to some strain among her family.
Speaking to People at the Worldwide Orphans Gala on Monday, Nico explained: ‘Honestly, it’s kind of a sensitive topic right this second.’

Making plans: Nico Tortorella and his partner Bethany Meyers are not welcome at her family’s holiday celebrations after opening up about their polyamorous relationship

Time together: Nico claimed that because of ‘all the attention that the relationship has gotten recently’ and ‘certain things that were said,’ they wouldn’t be seeing Bethany’s family
He added: ‘Because of all the attention that the relationship has gotten recently, we are coming up to the holiday season and because of certain things that were said, Bethany and I are not necessarily, completely welcome in her family celebrations this year.’
Despite the trouble it seems to be causing the couple, Nico added that he has no regrets about going public about their relationship, saying that it has rather convinced him that ‘we have to talk about it more.’
‘There are millions of people in non-traditional relationships that get cut off from their families every single day and it’s not okay,’ he said, adding the the couple will be spending their Thanksgiving in Chicago this year before taking a trip to Peru.
The 29-year-old actor first opened up earlier this year about his relationship of 11 years with fitness instructor Bethany, revealing that both identify as sexually fluid.
Earlier this month, Bethany also talked about just how she deals with being in an open relationship with the Younger heartthrob, saying that no matter how fulfilling their arrangement is, jealousy is always ‘absolutely the hardest thing.’
Partners: Bethany recently revealed how she and Nico have ‘rules’ for their open relationship
Longtime loves: The pair have been in a relationship for more than a decade, and both identify as sexually fluid
Speaking to MindBodyGreen, Bethany revealed that she is more ‘comfortable’ with women than men, and has been with Nico so long that she can’t see herself with another man.
She explained how it took sometime for the couple to come to the conclusion that an open relationship was best for them, with Bethany saying that they have had to iron out bumps along with way.
‘As humans, we want to feel like we’re No. 1 in our relationships. And at the end of the day, the best you can do is respect those feelings,’ she said.
‘So if my partner says “I feel jealous,” I make sure to allow them to feel that way and move through it.’
While they are both allowed to sleep with other people, Bethany claims that the couple still adheres to their own set of rules, such as arranging specific times when they would talk instead of saying things like ‘I’ll talk to you later.’
‘Yes, This Is A Queer Family’: Nico and Bethany, who covered the Advocate earlier this year, always make time for each other
Stylish couple: Bethany explained how they each let the other know before sleeping with someone else
They also make a point of letting the other person know before getting involved with someone else, saying that: ‘Sleeping with someone shouldn’t be an in-the-moment thing.’
‘Then you go back in and say, “how did that feel for you?” it’s a very clear conversation. You have to establish boundaries ahead of time,’ she said.
Earlier this year the couple were pictured on the cover of the Advocate, with Nico candidly opening up about their modern, queer family in the magazine’s pages.
Nico revealed last year that he is sexually fluid and had his first sexual experience with another man when he was in high school.
Together, the two challenge the norms surrounding gender and sexuality, and Nico admitted during the interview that he ‘would give it all up, everything in my life, to be able to carry a child myself’.
The stunning cover sees Nico and Bethany wearing matching, ribbed sleeveless shirts as they pose with their bodies pressed together while gazing at the camera.
Making it work: In addition to being in an open relationship, they are also polyamorous
In addition to being described as sexually fluid, he has also been called bisexual, demisexual, and queer, and he has no problems with being labeled if it helps others find someone with whom they can identify.
‘I think for so long there’s been like one quote-unquote normal way of life,’ he said. ‘And anybody that doesn’t live in that structure needs to find a home of sorts.
‘And I think labels are really important for kids, especially, [who] can’t find their tribe where they are, and need to go find their people, their family. For that reason, I think labels are extremely important.’
On the TV Land show Younger, Nico’s character Josh is in an on-again, off-again relationship with Liza, played by Sutton Foster, and his modern views on love and sex haven’t affected his heartthrob status in the least.
Last month, he told the New York Post that he falls ‘somewhere under the bisexual umbrella’, noting: ‘I am a white, cisgender-passing bisexual man, and I realize that not everyone has that privilege.’
Workout wonder: Nico’s partner Bethany is a fitness instructor and entrepreneur, and she often shares photos of herself showing off her incredible strength on Instagram
Happy as can be: Nico said his longest relationship has been with Bethany
Although he said it is possible that his sexual fluidity may one day affect his career, he refuses to change who he is.
‘I don’t think there have been positive bisexual role models in the world — especially in Hollywood,’ he said.
‘If you have a story that’s different than what you’re seeing out there, just get it out there.’
Nico, who has been sober for the past two-and-a-half years, also talks about sex and relationships on his podcast ‘The Love Bomb’.
The star is equally candid about his life and sobriety on his Instagram page, where he often shares hunky photos of himself flaunting his ripped body.
