Alexis Sanchez looks set to go to Manchester United this month

Sanchez has been dropped from the Arsenal squad for today’s trip to Bournemouth and his family arrived in London yesterday ahead of a move.

Sanchez is determined to leave Arsenal this month and had wanted to quit for Manchester City.

He remains keen on working with Pep Guardiola at City but the Independent report United now believe they are in the driving seat after upping in the ante over the last 24 hours.

Jose Mourinho described Sanchez as phenomenal on Friday and was coy on the emergence of a bid from Old Trafford.

United are willing to pay Arsenal’s £35m valuation and the agent fees to land Sanchez, while City are still refusing to go above £20m for a player who will cost nothing if he hangs on until the summer.

But that is looking increasingly unlikely after he was left out of the match squad for today’s game.

And United now appear favourite to sign him this month.

Wenger has even claimed he is likely to go and today’s move to leave him in London spells the end for a player who has wanted out since the summer.

Sanchez was distraught at failing to seal a switch to City on deadline day and has never forgiven Arsene Wenger for refusing the move back then.

He has still performed to a decent level this term, scoring seven goals in 19 Premier League.

But divides in the camp have become clearer with goal celebrations becoming more and more individual moments.

And Paul Merson thinks it’s a great deal for Arsenal – if they can get Henrik Mkhitaryan in return.

Merson says the Armenian would be a star at Arsenal, something they would not have if Sanchez and fellow contract-rebel Mesut Ozil left the club.

“I think if you can get Sanchez to Man United and get Mkhitaryan (it’s a good deal),” Merson said.

“I think Mkhitaryan’s one of the best players in the Premier League, I honestly do.

“I just think he’s shot at Man United, his confidence has gone.

“I think if you can get him to play like he did at Dortmund, you’ve got one of the best players.

“I think that’s a good deal because as you say Arsenal haven’t got a star.

“If he goes, who’s going to buy a shirt? Every shirt will have nobody’s name on it.

“Jack Wilshere might not be there. If Arsenal don’t sort themselves out, these are not the only two with contracts up.

“They could be absolute also-rans next season. And I don’t want this to sound bad towards Everton; they could be like Everton.”
