Most people use it to share selfies or, worse, boastful holiday moments.
Bill Young, a pilot from Texas, began his online journey in 2015 after decided to chart the various textile floorings he’d witness during stop-overs on long-haul flights.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his idea didn’t gain much web traction at first.
But, last Christmas, it received a game-changing boost when his daughter, Jill, encouraged her numerous Twitter followers to visit the page for fun.
Posting an online plea to the micro-blogging site, she wrote: ‘All I Want For Christmas is for my Dad’s hotel carpet Instagram to go viral, please help this happen.’
Almost immediately, followers flocked to see his curious postings under the handle @myhotelcarpet – and stayed. Now, one year on, he’s amassed more than 660,000 avid fans.

Clearly impressed – but stunned – by all the attention, Mr Young, who is also a semi-professional photographer, told Buzzfeed: ‘I just decided to do it as something fun while on the road.
‘Some of them have like, almost weird Illuminati symbols on them… or big badges or crazy gargoyles on them, or something like that.’
Adding her support, Jill added: ‘I was always surprised he never put in effort to get a whole bunch of followers.’

She added: ‘He didn’t really care about that, he just really liked carpet, and that made me really happy.
‘People have been overwhelmingly kind and saying such nice, positive things about my dad and calling him the ‘Carpet King’ – someone even said, ‘I would die for you, Bill Young.”
Meanwhile, Young has revealed that his personal favorite carpet is located at the Hotel Marriott, Long Beach.
‘There’s one on there that’s got kind of a pyramid,’ he told CNN. ‘It kind of looks like the Pink Floyd ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ album cover.’
