Ms Stuart is one of a small group of Labour MPs who supported withdrawal from the European Union. She believes Mr Corbyn should have followed the example of Harold Wilson, who stayed neutral during the 1975 European Communities referendum.
“[Harold Wilson] said very little to the campaigns and then accepted the result,” she said. “I just think for us as a party it would have been much wiser to do that.”
German-born Ms Stuart, who moved to the United Kingdom in 1974, has long argued that being a Leave voter does not make you a “racist” or “bigoted”.
