Nigel Farage and Jean Claude Junker

Juncker v Farage body language REVEALED – but which one made a ‘schoolboy error’?

EU leader Jean-Claude Junker and Brexit leader Nigel Farage are political opponents, and their tense relationship was played out ahead of the European Debate today.

In a photograph captured of the two politicians, they appear to be making jovial conversation, but a body language expert has claimed the two are far from friendly.

Junker, 62, is seen in the image highlighting a document, while Farage, 53, stands above him clutching documents.

However, it is Junker that has the upper hand in this scene, according to body language expert Judi James.

EU boss Junker v Brexit leader Nigel Farage body language revealed in latest news update

“We shouldn’t be too fooled by the semi-jovial facial expression of Farage and Juncker in this pose as in political terms it all about power-play and winning a status point,” Judi told

Judi claims Farage’s facial expression shows that he is more than aware of his position in the exchange.

“He was losing out on the power battle thanks to a schoolboy error in his choreography of the scene,” she said.

Judi claims Junker is almost ignoring the former-leader of UKIP by remaining seated.

“This kind of behaviour deflates the perceived status of the one left standing and waiting and makes Juncker look like a headmaster who has called an unruly schoolboy to his office for a telling-off,” Judi claimed.

What’s more, Farage is adding to this image by holding his folder high on his chest.

She added: “He uses it to create a barrier gesture that suggests a need for self-protection during the conversation.”

This, she claims, makes Farage look far weaker than his political opponent, something the Briton will be looking to avoid.

Today Farage made an address today, calling the plans to expand EU powers “extremely worrying”.

He said: “Thank God we’re leaving! You’ve learned nothing from Brexit!”

Despite his rousing speech, he was pipped to the post in the power stakes when coming face-to-face with Junker, the body language expert concludes.

“If Juncker had risen to greet him the balance of power would have looked even, but instead Juncker has performed the virtual ignore here, continuing to sit and work on his papers and only turning his head to show mild interest in the man lurking to his right.”
