High blood pressure is dangerous as it can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, meaning that if you are diagnosed with the condition you should take action immediately.

High blood pressure can be reduced by exercising more often, and eating more healthy foods.

Snacking on kale could help reduce your blood pressure, according to health website Healthline.

Leafy greens, which include kale, are full of potassium which can help lower blood pressure.

“Potassium helps your kidneys get rid of more sodium through your urine,” says Healthline on its website.

Kale contains as much as 491mg or potassium in each 100 grams, compared to bananas which contain just 358mg of the substance.

Other leafy greens that it recommends include romain lettuce, rocket and spinach.

The vegetable can be easily purchased from most UK supermarkets for as little as £1.

Potassium helps to lower blood pressure as it balances out the “negative effects” of salt that may be causing the condition, according to Blood Pressure UK.

“Your kidneys help to control your blood pressure by controlling the amount of fluid stored in your body.

“They do this by filtering your blood and sucking out any extra fluid, which it then stores in your bladder as urine.

“This process uses a delicate balance of sodium and potassium to pull water across a wall of cells from the bloodstream into a collecting channel that leads to the bladder.

“Eating salt raises the amount of sodium in your bloodstream and wrecks the delicate balance. By eating more fruit and vegetables, you will increase your potassium levels and help to restore the delicate balance.”

Other foods like apples can also help to lower blood pressure.

Eating four or more apples everyday could slash your hypertension risk by about nine per cent, 2016 research from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, US, has revealed.

Apples are rich in antioxidants, called flavonoids, that act as ACE inhibitors, said Brewer.

The antioxidant quercetin, which is found in apples, has protective effects on blood vessels to boost their elasticity.

Try adding red apples to your diet for the greatest hypertensive effect, she added.

Renetta Canada apples have the highest flavonoid content.

There aren’t any foods that diabetes patients should actively avoid, the NHS said.

But, you should consider cutting back on the amount of sugar, fat and salt in your diet.
