Government minister urges British holidaymakers to choose Blackpool over Benidorm

Jake Berry, the Northern Powerhouse minister, said he “would encourage people across the country to put away their passports”.

He added: “Now is the perfect time to support the Great British Coast and splash out on a trip to the seaside this summer.”

It came as Lord Callanan, the aviation minister, called on countries like Spain, Portugal and Italy to cut waiting times for UK tourists, as new EU border checks spread chaos spread across the Continent.

The British seaside has received huge investment in recent years to give faded resorts a facelift.

Since 2012 the Coastal Communities Fund has invested £170million in almost 300 projects across the UK.

Hull, this years City of Culture, has received £2million for projects such as the regeneration of the historic fruit market.

Cleethorpes recently received almost £3.8million to help boost tourism, while nearly £5million has been pumped into Blackpool, more than £2.5million into Bridlington and £600,000 into Hartlepool.

The results appear to be working.

Coastal tourism is worth £8 billion to the UK economy and is attracting more foreign visitors.

Mr Berry said more was being spent in the North of England.

Latest official figures show that in the North West alone, foreign tourists spent £307million in the first three months of this year, 48 per cent up from last year.
