Fortnite cross play could come to PS4 and Xbox One
Fortnite Mobile developer Epic Games is keen to make the Battle Royale blockbuster cross-platform between PS4 and Xbox One.
With Fortnite Mobile sign ups taking place later today, Epic Games and Microsoft have given fans fresh hope of cross-platform play between the two console versions.
The imminent Fortnite Mobile will be cross-platform between iOS, Android, PC, Mac and Xbox One, and also between iOS, Android, PC, Mac and PS4.
But what fans really want is cross-platform play between PS4 and Xbox One. And it looks like Microsoft is also keen to make this happen.
One fan told Microsoft executive Phil Spencer that he really wanted cross-platform compatibility between PS4 and Xbox One.
Spencer simply replied: “Me 2.” This was followed by an official Fortnite tweet, reading: “We 3!”
This implies that Sony is reluctant to support the feature.
After missing the original announcement, Xbox One cross-platform play was finally confirmed on the weekend.
“We’re happy to announce today that in partnership with our friends at Microsoft, Fortnite will feature cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase, between Xbox One, PC, Mac, iOS and (in the next few months) Android,” reads an official Epic statement.
“Contrary to what may have been implied, Microsoft has long been a leading voice in supporting cross-platform play, connecting players across PC, mobile and all consoles.
“We’ve been working together with them over the last several months to make this possible, and will bring this functionality to Fortnite players on Xbox right along with other platforms.”
Epic would later point out that cross-platform play is optional, with players having the choice to opt-in.
Fortnite Mobile sign-ups will begin later today on iOS phones and tablets.
Fans will be able to test the experience as part of the Fortnite Invite Event. This will be followed by a full launch later this year.
The mobile port will feature the same 100-person Battle Royale gameplay as the console and PC versions.
This includes the same map, the same unlockable content and even the same weekly updates.
