A new EKLIPSE report has examined the impacts of electromagnetic radiation on wildlife through a meta-analysis of papers addressing the subject.

According to Buglife, who proposed the review, there are ‘surprisingly few’ published studies about EMR’s impact on wildlife.

After poring through 97 papers, the researchers determined the risks of this type of radiation may be far greater than previously considered.

It could disrupt birds’ and bugs’ orientation and movement, and affect plant metabolic health, Buglife warns.

Authors of the EKLIPSE report warn that there is ‘an urgent need to strengthen the scientific basis of the knowledge on EMR and their potential impacts on wildlife.’

‘In particular,’ the authors wrote, ‘there is a need to base future research on sound, high-quality, replicable experiments so that credible, transparent, and easily accessible evidence can inform society and policy-makers to make decisions and frame their policies.’

According to the new review, the electromagnetic wireless signals from powerlines, radar, TV/radio broadcasting, Wi-Fi and 2G/3G/4G communications could all have negative effects on wildlife.

And, with plans for 5G steadily gaining traction, the situation could soon be even worse.

The researchers say the risks of EMR must be considered moving forward.

‘We apply limits to all types of pollution to protect the habitability of our environment, but as yet, even in Europe, the safe limits of electromagnetic radiation have not been determined, let alone applied,’ said Buglife CEO Matt Shardlow.

‘This is a classic case of out of sight out of mind, just because humans cannot see electromagnetic radiation this does not mean that animals cannot “see” the pollution or be significantly impacted at a neural or cellular level.

‘A proper research program and clear policy measures are long overdue.’
