Crocodile swims up to shore to chomp into a giant groper

Beachgoers were left stunned on Thursday morning when a salt water crocodile swam up to shore to grab a bite to eat.

A crowd had gathered around the carcass of a large groper fish washed up to shore at a beach in Cardwell, Cairns, when the large crocodile was seen swimming towards them.

The apex predator zoomed towards its prey before taking a big snap towards the beached fish.

Resting in the shallows of the beach, where a sign warning of crocodile activity had been planted nearby, the croc continued to nibble at its breakfast.

The lengthy reptile moved back and forth, nearly circling the groper, as the fish rolled in the tiny waves which washed ashore.

Video filmed by Darwin woman Kate Rogers shows the croc eventually pull the groper into its mouth and begin to move back into deeper water.

She shared the clip to social media, where many of her neighbours recognised the crocodile as a regular to the area.

Named Bismark, the reptile has fans throughout the beachside town and has reportedly been a regular to the beach for quite some time.

While the sand appeared empty in the video, many shared their relief the crocodile hadn’t appeared any earlier or later.

One woman revealed she had been in the water at the time, only a ‘few metres’ from the feasting beast.

Though a crowd had begun to form closer to the groper, onlookers backed off when the croc approached
