Bone cancer symptoms: Watch out for these less common arthritis-like symptoms

Bone cancer symptoms are triggered by the activity of cancerous cells disrupting the bone.

The cancer can appear in any bone in the body, although it is most common in the long bones of the legs and upper arms.

There are three main types, including osteosarcoma, which affects children and young adults, ewing sarcoma, which affects people aged between 10 and 20 years, and chondrosarcoma, which appears in older individuals.

Bone cancer symptoms and signs can appear in young people because their rapid growth spurts put them at greater risk of developing the condition.

The NHS says there are three other symptoms of this cancer.

Bone pain is the most common symptom of bone cancer

“Bone pain is the most common symptom of bone cancer,” says the national healthcare provider on its website.

“Some people experience other symptoms as well.”

High temperature

If someone is suffering from bone cancer, their temperature may also spike, causing a fever.

A symptom of the condition would be a temperature of 38 degrees or over.

Sweating

Sweating more than usual, particularly at night, can also be a symptom of blood cancer according to the NHS.

Weight loss

An unexplained reduction in body weight can also indicate this cancer.

“Sudden, noticeable weight loss can happen after a stressful event, although it can also be a sign of a serious illness,” says the national healthcare provider.

These symptoms are similar to those that appear during arthritis.

Arthritis Research UK says that unexplained weight loss, mild fevers and night sweats can all also be symptoms of several forms of arthritis.

The NHS warns that bone cancer symptoms, including the main sign bone pain, can sometimes be “wrongly mistaken” for arthritis.

Bone cancer symptoms: You should watch out for the less common arthritis-like signs

Bone cancer is a rare type of cancer that begins in bones.

The NHS estimates that only around 550 new cases of the condition are diagnosed every year in the UK.

Bone cancer’s main symptom is pain in the bones that does not disappear, but gets worse over time.

“You might have an area that is painful or tender,” says Cancer Research UK on bone cancer.

“It might be painful when you are resting. The pain is often worse when you’re in bed at night.”

The NHS describes the bone aching as beginning with a “feeling of tenderness in the affected bone”.

“This gradually progresses to a persistent ache or an ache that comes and goes, which continues at night when resting.”

If you fear you have the condition, Cancer Research UK advises that you should contact your GP.
